Gary Legters, WGRZ-TV Operations Manager ; July 1, 1948 -- July 30, 2007

Gary Legters, who was operations manager of WGRZ-TV, Channel 2, died Monday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga, after battling cancer for seven years. He was 59.

Born in Corry, Pa., Mr. Legters graduated from Clymer Central School in 1964 and Fredonia State College in 1968. He entered broadcasting a short time later as a studio cameraman for a small Grand Island television station.

In 1973, Mr. Legters moved to WGRZ, where he worked 18 years as operations manager. He headed the station's local production, including telethons.

After leaving Channel 2 in 1991, he worked briefly in Columbus, Ohio, before joining WGME in Portland, Maine, where he was operations manager until his illness forced him to step down in May.

Survivors include his mother, June Chapman, and daughter, Cristie Huennekens.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, 271 E. Main St., Springville.
