But, Wait, There's More! -- Before You Buy

Journal Star; Peoria, Ill.

Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro offers this advice before buying anything from an infomercial:

Be wary of infomercials that promise unbelievable benefits from the product. Always remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

- Before making a purchase, ask what the shipping and handling cost will be. There is no restriction on what a company can charge for shipping and handling. Many times, a consumer doesn't receive the savings they were led to believe they would receive due to high shipping and handling costs.

- When making a purchase, use a credit card. This is most helpful if a dispute arises. If you notice a problem, promptly report it to the credit card company. Never use your debit card, especially if you are unfamiliar with the company.

- If you use a credit card account for the purchase and the product is returned, the merchant must credit your account within one billing cycle, not issue a credit toward another purchase. If you pay by cash, check or money order, the merchant must mail you a refund within seven working days.

- A company has eight weeks to make shipment or delivery of the ordered goods, unless an earlier delivery date has been promised. The company must advise you of any extended delay or offer to send a refund within two weeks if it fails to deliver as promised.

- Be certain you are dealing with a reputable firm. Check unfamiliar companies by looking at their Web site, calling the toll- free numbers given, and by contacting your local Better Business Bureau and your state's attorney general's consumer protection office.
