FTC Charges Diet Supplement Marketers

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has charged the marketers of two dietary supplements -- CortiSlim and CortiStress --with making deceptive claims.

The Window Rock defendants' weight-loss and disease-prevention claims fly in the face of reality, said Lydia Parnes, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. No pill can replace a healthy program of diet and exercise.

The FTC's complaint alleges that the Window Rock defendants, Stephen Cheng, Gregory Cynaumon and Shawn Talbott, who sold the diet supplements in TV infomercials, ads and on the Internet, violated the FTC Act by making deceptive efficacy claims for CortiSlim and CortiStress.

The complaint alleges the infomercials said the supplements causes weight loss of 10 to 50 pounds for virtually all users and that elevated levels of cortisol are the underlying cause of every modern lifestyle disease that is associated with this fast-paced 21st century lifestyle.

The defendants have submitted an interim agreement that they cannot make any of the claims alleged in the complaint, future ads must be supported by competent and reliable scientific evidence, they cannot misrepresent that their products are supported by scientific studies and they cannot misrepresent themselves as something other than a paid advertisement.
