Mar. 30--El Dorado Hills-based NutraCea announced Wednesday that its RiceMucil nutritional wafers could soon be available in stores.

NutraCea, which makes a variety of products from rice bran, now sells online and through infomercials and multilevel marketing.

The company announced Wednesday that it signed a preliminary agreement recently with StoneBridge Pharma LLC, of Duluth, Ga., giving NutraCea access to tens of thousands of retailers nationwide. Financial terms were not disclosed.

NutraCea produces "stabilized" rice bran through a technique that deactivates an enzyme that otherwise causes the bran to spoil quickly. Rice bran contains a variety of nutrients as well as dietary fiber.

"These wafers were specifically developed to compete with products like Metamucil, Citrucel and FiberCon, yet go beyond the benefits of fiber and laxative products," said Margie Adelman, NutraCea's senior vice president.
