Sep. 1--Reflecting the growth of the black middle-class and overall population growth, Charlotte jumped two places Thursday to become the 16th largest television market in terms of African American households.
Charlotte rose three spots to be the 43rd largest Hispanic market in the nation, Nielsen Media Research said in releasing its 2006-07 ethnic population estimates.
Charlotte's overall television market -- stretching from the Virginia line to Chester, S.C. -- is the nation's 26th largest with 1.04 million households with televisions by Nielsen's estimate.
African American households grew by 5,000 to 193,750 in the annual rankings, representing nearly 20 percent of all TV households in the 22-county market.
Rankings matter to national advertisers, who make placement orders based in part on niche audiences in various regions.
Raleigh's market, which includes Durham and Fayetteville, remains No. 12 nationally in African American TV households with 272,780, Nielsen said.
Columbia remained No. 25 and Greensboro advanced one notch to No. 27. New York, Chicago and Atlanta are the largest markets for African American TV households.
Charlotte also advanced three spots to become the No. 43 market in Hispanic TV households with 46,410. Raleigh climbed three notches to No. 38 with 50,780.
In Asian households, Charlotte ranked No. 32 with 17,710 and Raleigh No. 28 with 24,890.
